Richmond played a pivotal role in the Civil War as a key strategic center and is home to landmarks such as the American Civil War Museum.

Its role in the American Revolution is equally notable, with sites like St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry delivered his famous "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech.
This rich history mixes seamlessly with the city’s lively energy today, creating a unique blend of the past and present that you won’t find anywhere else.

VCU brings so much life to the area, from its vibrant arts program that dazzles with theater productions to its high-energy basketball games that turn the city into a sea of black and gold. The medical program isn’t just impressive—it’s a cornerstone of the community, making a real difference in people’s lives.

Bars & Breweries

Richmond, Virginia, has seen remarkable growth in its bar and brewery scene over the years, transforming into a hub for craft beverages and nightlife.

This rich history dates back to the 19th century when David G. Yuengling Jr., brother of the founder of Yuengling Brewery, established his own brewery in the city. His efforts helped lay the foundation for Richmond's brewing heritage, which has evolved into a modern craft beer movement.

 

Today, the city is celebrated for its vibrant mix of breweries and bars, offering diverse experiences for locals and visitors alike.

 

  • Patrick Henry's Pub & Grille- Cozy pub in the historic Inn at Patrick Henry's offering American grub, draft beer & a garden patio.

  • Pennylane Pub- Chummy Liverpudlian pub serving English & American tavern fare in a decor-rich, dark-wood setting.

  • Sticky Rice- Providing innovative sushi and cheap beer for over 25 years. One of Jenny's favorite Friday night spots in college! 

  • Stone Brewing- Founded by Greg Koch and Wagner in 1996 with a mission to create amazing, flavorful beers,  and provide an alternative choice for unsatisfied with industrial beers dominating the market.

  • The Jasper- Full pours & honest pricing! 

  • Hardywood Craft Brewery- The original taproom in Richmond's historic German Brewing District. 

  • GwarBar- Known for their bloody stage shows, irrelevant humor, and high volume metal/punk. 

  • Richbrau Brewing- With a nod to those who came before, Richbrau Brewing in Shockhoe Bottom, the most historic area in Richmond, offers a cozy tasting room and delicious drinks.

  • The Village Cafe- Serving Richmond's finest and craziest since before you were born. It's also Johnny's favorite breakfast in RVA!

  • City Diner- This lowkey, neighborhood mainstay is Jenny's favorite breakfast in RVA!

  • Kuba Kuba- Homestyle Cuban dishes are the draw at this neighborhood hot spot with an upbeat atmosphere.

  • Edo's Squid- Casual brick-lined Italian restaurant with a full bar and plenty of calamari dishes on the menu.

  • City Dogs- Easygoing watering hole featuring creatively topped dogs, tap beer, and vegan options with the option of a quiet, outdoor patio. 

  • Garnett's- Nostalgic eatery boasts an old-fashioned sandwich menu, craft beers on tap & funky diner decor.

  • Bottoms Pizza- Longtime go-to for elevated pizza & burgers in a busy, brick-walled space with an enclosed patio. One slice will fill up most!  

  • Piccola's Pizza & Subs- Bustling local spot serving a varied Italian menu in a quaint, casual environment with full bar.

  • Pearly's- Creative Jewish deli bites & dinners served in a funky, retro eatery decorated with old photos.

  • Lost Poet- Classic Italian dishes and small plates pair with beer, wine, and cocktails at this intimate eatery. Reservations recommended.

  • Joe's Inn- Retro eatery opened in 1952, known for it's broad comfort food menu, vintage vibe, and adjacent bar.

  • The Boathouse at Rockets Landing- Experience everything that is unique about Richmond at our Rocketts Landing location: a vibrant city among luscious greenery and calming water.  Sit on their outdoor patio overlooking the James River, while enjoying their expertly prepared local seafood.

  • Can Can Brasserie- Located on Carytown's main strip, this Parisian-style eatery has a classic bistro setting with dark woods, tiles & mirrors. 

  • Galaxy Diner- Also located on Carytown's main strip, this colorful space-age diner dishes out burgers & comfort classics, including all-day breakfast.

  • Idle hands Bread Company- Neighborhood bakery selling bread and pastries, including vegan options, plus coffee.

  • Proper Pie- Small, quaint bakery serving a rotating menu of New Zealand–style pies with sweet & savory fillings.

  • Carytown- A unique shopping, dining, and entertainment district with a focus on small locally owned businesses. 

  • The Byrd Theatre- A historic cinema opened in 1928, features previously run movies at a ticket price of under $10!

  • Virginia Museum of Fine Arts- Explore nearly 50,000 works of arts spanning 6,000 years of world history. 

  • King's Dominion- A Theme Park with 13 roller coasters. In October it is home to Halloween Haunt, where Johnny worked for 7 years. 

  • Shadows of Shockoe Ghost Tour- Guided evening walking Tours of Shockoe Bottom, Richmond's oldest and most haunted neighborhood, with tales of paranormal activity. 

  • Hollywood Cometary- A historic rural cemetery established in 1847. It's 135 acres are the resting place of both President James Monroe and John Tyler. 

  • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden- Features over a dozen themed gardens, a conservatory, a library, and cafe. 

  • Pocahontas State Park- Virginia's largest and oldest state park. It's an outdoor playground with 90 miles of trails and three lakes. 

  • The James River- Begins in the Appalachian Mountains and flows from the confluence of the Cowspasture and Jackson Rivers.

  • Belle Isle- An island in the middle of the James River. It's a great place for a hike, kayak, or swim on warm days. 

  • Maymont- A 100 acre green space in the heart of Richmond. Explore it's spectacular Gilded age Mansion, beautiful curated gardens, immersive nature center, interactive farm and rescued animal habitats.

  • Poe Museum- Though Poe never lived in this building it serves to commemorate his time living in Richmond. The museum holds one of the world's largest collections of original manuscripts, letter, first editions, memorabilia, and personal belongings. 

  • Virginia Capital & Execute Mansion- Designed by Thomas Jefferson, the State Capitol houses America’s oldest legislative assembly. Daily one-hour guided tours showcase historical statuary and paintings, rare exhibit objects, and newly restored legislative chambers. Self-guided tours also are available. And don't miss the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial, unveiled in 2008 at Capitol Square. The Executive Mansion is the oldest continuously occupied governor’s home (since 1813) in the country.

  • Children's Museum of Richmond- The downtown, flagship location offers 44,000 square feet of fun, discovery, and learning through play! From splish-splash and whirlpool of water play, to indoor "apple picking" and a kid-run TV studio, there are endless opportunities to play, create, and learn. 

  • Science Museum of Virginia- Located adjacent to the Children's Museum of Richmond, the Science Museum offers exciting interactive exhibits. Permanent exhibits include Speed, which contains more than 50 stations showcasing motion, time, science, and technology in various ways. 

  • The Robin's Nature Center at Maymont- The Robin 's Nature Center, is a 29,000 square foot attraction and holds 30,000 gallons of aquaria showcasing animals of the James River and Chesapeake Bay. 

  • Metro Richmond Zoo- Visit Virginia's largest Zoological park with over 2,000 animals representing 190 species from around the world. Situated on 150 acres of land, the Metro Richmond Zoo has plenty to offer including feeding giraffes, relaxing on the train, and ziplining above kangaroos. If you go, don't forget to visit the Zoo's newest and most adorable addition poppy, the pygmy hippo. 

  • Treetop Zoofari- Part of the Metro Zoo, experience nature like never before. High in the forest canopy and above the Zoo, zipline over diverse wildlife like tapirs, capybaras, toucans, gazelles, toucans, gazelles, monkeys, emus, and kangaroos.
